Lettuce, Prepare To Meet Your Maker

I was just out in the garden harvesting the absolute last lettuce of the season. I've thought a couple of times in the past week or so that surely the lettuce would bolt and be done for, but then it got weirdly cool and the lettuce kept soldiering on. But I KNOW this is the absolute last lettuce we'll be able to eat until fall. And the reason I know this is because our weather forecast looks like this:

Today: High 93, Low 67
Tuesday: High 94, Low 69
Wednesday: High 95, Low 70
Thursday: What the hell is this, Death Valley?

HAHA! Just kidding on that last one! Death Valley doesn't have crippling humidity to add to the fun.

The lettuce might not be the only casualty here.

Look on the bright side: By Thursday the walls of the house will be nice and warm, so it won't be such a shock walking out into the much-hotter outside air.

Heh, it's supposed to be 100 degrees in NYC and in Philadelphia this week! Could be worse!

Mary in MN, where it's a sunny and dry 80 degrees.

Word Verification: dismo. What it is outside at your house.

Sounds nasty, but the actual weather for Death Valley is along the lines of 116/84, the extra 20 degrees sort of cancels the "but it's a DRY heat" factor.

Yeah, my poor lettuce had a rough go of it this year. 90 degree days in early June caused it to bolt and revolt early. Enjoy the last bits while you can!

Only a person who hasn't been in this crapola humidity would say that the dry heat isn't better. Beth

Our weather, thank goodness, improved for a week. Now if only the spinach would come up! I'm afraid the bugs or birds got at it when it was starting and now it's history. Replant, maybe?

It's not super humid here. It'd pretty dry, most of the time actually. As in your lungs turn to dust and your nostrils dry out and crack open every time you inhale dry. But we broke 100 degree here in early June. Low to mid 90s actually sounds almost pleasant.
