To Each Her Own

I was at the grocery store with the oldest son last week and I told him he could choose an ice cream flavor. He surveyed the options for a minute before deciding on black cherry.

That was pretty much the last flavor available that I would have chosen.

These were the small cartons of ice cream, so I also got butter pecan for the rest of the family. All of them like that one, although again, I don't care about it at all. It doesn't actively repel me like black cherry, but I still won't bother eating it.

I did choose one for myself, though: chocolate moose tracks. Chocolate, peanut butter, and more chocolate? That's more like it.

A tale of two ice creams.

A. has always preferred fruit-flavored candies, ice creams, and desserts. I have always preferred chocolate. Preferably with peanut butter. He does not understand this. I likewise do not understand why anyone would eat black cherry ice cream when they could have chocolate moose tracks.

Variety is the spice of life, they say, and I guess that means our lives are plenty spicy.

So tell me: What kind of ice cream do you pick, given the choice?

  1. One of the best flavours I have had recently was Mascarpone and Orange - it was delicious. My go to though is probably chocolate, with choc-chunks or mint & choc or with nuts, white choc & coconut. Or mango ice-cream (not sorbet). Basically, I like ice-cream and would probably eat any put in front of me apart from rum & raisin (yuck) or strawberry (intolerant to strawbs)
Ben & Jerry's used to do Chunky Monkey which was banana ice cream with huge choc chunks and walnuts but I haven't seen that over here for years :-( But their Minter Wonderland is amazing!!

    1. I was not aware of the existence of rum and raisin ice cream, and I suppose I shouldn't reject it out of hand without ever trying it, but . . . no. Liquor in dessert is an automatic disqualifier for me.

  2. I have been a stalwart chocolate-and-peanut butter ice cream fan my whole life, but as I trundle along into middle age, I have started preferring fruit desserts. I have also given up alcohol, which is no longer kind to me as a woman in her late forties and now I really love lemonade and will choose lemon sorbet over moose tracks. Who even am I anymore?

    1. The same person you were before, just . . . fruitier. :-)

  3. I like cookie dough or chocolate chip- the Walmart version of cookie dough is really good. But plain vanilla with chocolate syrup runs close. Or on rare occasion, chocolate soft serve. No nuts, fruit, alcohol, or pb for me. Very boring ice cream taste here!
We just finished up a three gallon cylinder of vanilla from the cafeteria lady ( from end of school- it had 2.5 gallons left). My teen sons loved the grandeur of the container. And I was desperate to get it out of my freezer, so they could eat as much as they wanted.

    1. Three gallons?! Lucky you. That would be wildly popular here, too, where quantity is always a big consideration.

  4. My first job in high school was at Baskin Robins. At the end of each shift we got a scoop of ice cream. Blueberry cheesecake was one of my favorites and still is.

    1. Very fond memories of walking to Baskin Robbins when we lived in Hawaii. That was the era of the baseball helmet bowls. :-)

  5. If I could order one today it would be Black Walnut but I don't turn down any kind.

    1. I didn't know there was black walnut ice cream. I never much cared for the taste of black walnuts when we had thousands of them from our trees in New York, but maybe in ice cream their strong taste would be an asset.

  6. I live in the land of Tillamook … any trip to the coast includes an ice cream stop at their factory. Due to dairy allergies, I can no longer eat dairy based ice cream. My plant-based options are limited or there is sorbet. Tillamook does have sorbet, but you have to ask. At least I can join my family. My favorite non-dairy ice cream is a caramel sea salt swirl. Yum! Too be honest, I’ll eat any non-dairy ice cream (at least once) because I’m so thrilled to have the option. I do turn my nose up at Mango sorbet as it seems so ordinary (and, for ages was the only non-dairy option).

    1. I have never had Tillamook ice cream, but I'm sure it's delightful. That's too bad you can't have it anymore.

  8. Pete's carries a dairy-free vanilla made with almond milk, which is my option since my body started rebelling at lactose. It's good for what it is, but I really miss bittersweet symphony(coffee with chocolate chips). Mil

    1. I told Middle Son that when he goes to Pete's this summer, he should get White Lightning in honor of the ice cream that sustained him in utero when I was pregnant with him during that brutally hot summer.

  9. I am firmly with you. My husband is also the fruity one. We went for my eldest's birthday to a local ice cream spot. I branched out with honey lavender because my husband teased me that I always get the same thing (I think it's called peanut butter overload). The honey lavender was okay. I was coveting my daughter's peanut butter paradise (which is a new flavor there). I have been wanting to go back to try that peanut butter paradise---I mean, the name! It is peanut butter ice cream with gobs of peanut butter in it PLUS chocolate-covered honeycomb cereal.

  10. At Dairy Queen, I nearly always get the chocolate brownie extreme. It has a new name, something choco something, but it's my enduring favorite.

Moose/bunny tracks is another favorite. There's a version of that in some brands that the cups/shapes are caramel inside instead of peanut butter, and I'm totally on board with that.

  11. Pecan pralines and cream by Blue Bell Ice Cream. Or Tin Cup, also from Blue Bell. Can’t resist.
