There are flannel sheets on the beds . . .
Green tomatoes in the kitchen . . .
Wood smoke drifting from the chimney . . .
Frost on the window . . .
And my nose is cold at night.
Ain't no doubt: It's fall at Blackrock.
Is it fall at your house yet? How can you tell?
It's definitely fall at our house: lots of sweatshirts & blankets, a big pot of chili on the stove for Sunday football, and one ornery cat permanently attached to my lap.
ReplyDeleteOne way to tell it's fall (going on winter) at our house: hot chocolate (or sometimes tea for me) as the nightly snack instead of ice cream. I also had to scrape frost off my car this morning. Damn.
ReplyDeleteA sure sign of fall in Minnesota is when the mice do their best to move into your house! They seem to stand outside with their little suitcases and wait for the smallest opening to appear in the walls or foundation of the house--and then they come marching in and hope that you forget and leave the dog food in the dog dish at night so they can start storing it behind the refrigerator. ReplyDeleteYour "fall" sounds beautiful, btw.
ReplyDeleteFall at my house because there's a fire in the fireplace, Cocoa in the cup and well... as far as flannel, I try to get away with flannel as soon as September hits and rarely take them off before June, so that's not a very reliable indicator around here.
It's been clear, sunny and about 75-80 the last few days - and I hope it stays like this a little while longer. We don't get a traditional summer, so all our warm temps are in late Sept./early Oct. Everyone's talking about fall and we're just getting our summer!
ReplyDeleteLet's see last night in bed...hubby (as usual), me (don't spend enough time there), sweet daughter (thought she might have outgrown this), baby son (don't think he'll ever outgrow this)! Yep its gettin' cold out...the family bed is here for the rest of the season. Maybe I should put a woodstove upstairs to keep the little varmits in their own beds.
ReplyDeleteI saw approximately 817 wooly caterpillars trying to cross the roads on the 80-mile drive down to my dad's place on Saturday. (And, yes, sometimes if there are no other cars coming at me, I will drive around said woolies... what can I say?)
ReplyDeleteWhen I actually get cold enough to approach our floor furnace with the intent of turning it on/blowing my face off, it's fall.
ReplyDeleteFlannel sheets feel yucky.

Oh it's fall all right. I measure this by waking up to a temperature below 60 degrees. Pathetic, I know, but it doesn't take much to convince me. Your fall sounds way better than my fall, though.
ReplyDeleteI'm in Phoenix. It's still flippin hot.
ReplyDeleteI guess not AS hot if were being honest, but bad enough.
Fall at my house means i sleep in my sweatpants and sweatshirt to keep warm just cuz we aren't ready to turn on the heat just yet. Even with the heat i'd still sleep in my sweats.
ReplyDeleteWhen I wake up and see fog spilling out of the cranberry bog like a cauldron, it's fall.
ReplyDeleteI think today winter may have hit... Not hard core, but there was snow in that there rain!
ReplyDeleteWe haven't turned our furnace on yet - we are trying to wait until November 1st this year... But the fireplace is going full bore, and its still cold in here. Our overnights are below freezing (usually between 28 and 34), but the sun warms up the upper two levels nicely during the day. The lower two FA-REEZE.
Just as I typed it, my husband walked down the stairs with a smirk on his face... I guess November 1st came a little early... I smell dusty heat piping through the vents... He used the excuse that my daughter left the front door open and he is cold.
Oh well. I guess that means fall is officially here. Or winter maybe?
Susan--What a beautiful image.
ReplyDeleteLori--Why am I not surprised that it was your husband who caved first? Now the question is, what would he have done if YOU had turned it on and said YOU were cold? I know what A. would have done--started stomping around ranting about dollar-bill burners. But it's okay if he turns the heat on. Or is this just in my house?
fall at my house means the flies are gone. you have to wear socks or slippers on the tile floors because they are cold. my house doesn't get above 65 degrees even though it's 80 outside. and taking a nap on the couch when football is on tv.
