Well Hello, Poppets!

Welcome back to work! It is not yet time to feel totally depressed and miserable that the fun of the holidays is over--time enough for that next Monday, when New Year's Eve is done with and there are no more days off until Memorial Day. If you're A., that is, who did a wonderful imitation of Bob Cratchit as he shuffled off to work on the Friday after Christmas.

BUT ANYWAY.

No depression today! Only happy thoughts! Which brings me to the question of the day: What was the best present you got for Christmas/Hanukkah/Hanumas/whatever you celebrate? A car? A diamond ring? A single ripe orange and a doll made of rags*? OR, did you get an iPod Nano, like a certain blogger I know who lives in upstate New York and may in fact be something of a technophobe but is nonetheless thrilled to have music when she runs if she could only figure out how to get all the songs she wants on it?

But this is not about me (I KNOW--an iPod Nano? Is that not the most surprising--and yet most awesome--gift A. could have given me?). This is about YOU and YOUR best gift. Lay it on me.

* If it was good enough for Laura Ingalls Wilder, it's good enough for me! (Except not really, because, man, what a screw.)

  1. This year Mr. Mom gave me a beautiful Michael Kors watch, and Santa gave me a new set of Calaphon stainless steel cookware. Both are utilitarian, but wonderful in their own way.

P.S. My son got an iPod touch. What did we do for music before the iPod? (I know, we had Walkmans. And before that, albums. Yes, I'm old enough to have listened to my Captain and Tenille on albums! I just prefer to forget.)

  2. I would've loved an iPod Nano! I got some cash (well, two checks) for Chanukah, which was promptly deposited into my checking account to pay some bills. My cousin got us tickets to see Fleetwood Mac in March! And that was her best gift ever, seeing how I was all set to return whatever she got me like I do every year.

  3. After years of pretending like I didn't need/want one, I got an iPod a few years ago, and LO, THEY ARE AWESOME. Congrats!

This year, Brad gave me a baby book that turned me into a goddamn mess for about 45 solid minutes, so that was good. And my sister got me a sweet-ass diaper bag. Am now realizing that all my gifts were pretty much baby-related. Wait, I DID get some fancy lotion and pretty earrings - take THAT, fetus!

  5. Over-the-knee socks.

I know they're not "grand" and "exciting", but darnit I love them and nobody ever gets them for me. So this year BabyGirl bought me TWO SETS. Oh, and a squirrel bungee feeder. I probably should have said the squirrel feeder so I didn't sound like such a loon. Or the GPS direction thingie Husband got me. But I'm afraid I'll still be lost, even with the GPS thing.

  6. My hubby wrote me a poem. It told me of his undying love and then at the end was the little ditty that I would have to order my own Christmas present because he didn't know which camera lens I wanted, lol! Now if he had bothered to ask me sooner than Christmas Eve what I wanted then he might have been able to figure it out and order it, but no...anyway I got a sweet sappy poem and went and ordered my new camera lens that night and splurged on two day shipping so it should be here today! Happy Christmas to me!!! Kim
Oh yeah all my kids were home for the holidays, that was totally cool too!

  8. My step-mom, who is "into" china painting, painted and fired a necklace for me. It's pretty, but the best present is that after a heart attack and triple bypass in September, she's still here and healthy at Christmas.

  9. I got an old nativity set my parents have had for quite a while. I have always loved it. I was super happy to open up a box containing all the beautifully handmade pottery pieces on Christmas.

  11. I accidentally married Scrooge's grandson. His heart's in the right place, but he doesn't like to be bullied into things. Like buying presents.

    He got me new tires.

Lucky for me, I have a boss who is very kind to me. She gave me a shiny trinket. I like shiny trinkets. I also like not sliding off the road to my death while wearing a shiny trinket. It's the best of both worlds.

  12. I got a new crockpot. I love it already. Mine died after a long life of abuse and misuse. I promise to take better care of this cutie.

  14. Oh, girl. The Nano. Bubba gave me one for Hanumas last year and I love it long time. It's been through one year of 1/2 marathon training with me and it's my BFF. Well, as much as a piece of plastic and magic can be.

I think the best thing I got this year, aside from the FlipVideo that Bubba gave me (SWEET) was the freezer full of beef my mom gave us. Love that 4H!

I'm making bacon meatloaf right now.

  15. Ha! I am reading this in the midst of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. But I got a huge laptop for Christmas 2008. It weighed elenty-hundred pounds and put out more heat than our furnace, giving me heat rash on my thighs as I actually used it in my lap.

  16. What fun it is to read these postings many years later. I hope all of these people continue to have wonderful gifts and great lives--and are surviving COVID and COVID-Delta...
