Photographic Evidence

You all know Blackrock is cold, right? But you only know that because I've told you that. What if I'm not trustworthy? What if I've been lying to you?

Your lack of faith hurts me.

I have not been lying, and now I have the photo to prove it.

I took this yesterday in the north bedroom. Where, as I have mentioned before, ice forms on the walls in the winter.

I TOLD YOU SO.

Now technically, I suppose that's really frost I scratched that into, not ice. And I can't tell you how cold it actually was in the room at the time because someone (NAMED A.) dropped the thermometer and busted it. But I think you all get the point: It's really, REALLY cold in our house, y'all. Ain't no denyin'. At least in the north bedroom.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go hug the woodstove.

  1. Holy shit. Holy shit! That's some cold shit.

Sorry for the profanity, but cold provokes that it me. We have one very cold room . . . the sunroom. With ten 70-year-old windows, the room has no chance of maintaining a decent temp. It's sweltering in the summer and freezing in the winter. And it just happens to be our favorite place to hang out. My kids play video games in the west end, and I craft/dream/create in the east end. I spent all day there yesterday, freezing my butt off, and it was -- oh -- probably 58 degrees. I bow to the master. You are the pioneer zen master.

  3. Holy cats AND Holy shit!I suppose there's no cost efficient way to bump up the degrees a bit? Does that moisture on the walls do damage eventually? Would it completely take away the charm of that beautiful house to install central heat and air? And how do you bring yourself to take a bath? Aaarrgghhh!

  4. I should perhaps clarify . . . this is the coldest room in the house. Also the only one that frost forms in. We don't hang out in this room in the winter.

We have very distinct zones of heat in the house, so that in the dining room, where the woodstove is and where we spend most of our time in the winter, it's probably at least in the 60s, if not warmer. The bathrooms have space heaters, so they're bearable.

It might be possible to heat the north bedroom with the furnace, but the furnace would have to be running constantly and it would really be prohibitively expensive. We're looking into putting a woodstove in that room in the future.

And yes, the moisture on the wall does bad things to paint. But we have to re-paint in there anyway, so we're not worrying about it too much right now.

  6. I wouldn't even stand in there long enough to take a photo, let alone take the time to etch words into the wall and then take a photo. Ice inside is just not right.

  8. CRAP...now that is cold. I can't even imagine. I hate to be cold, really hate it. So I guess an old stone house is out of the question. I will just enjoy yours from afar, lol! Now go put on some longjohns! Kim

    My.

    Gawd.

Also, my WV is 'hambling' - I now have the insatiable urge to bedazzle a ham.

  10. This kind of chilly nonsense makes me SO HAPPY to live in Alabama. I don't understand how people survive where the temperature gets below freezing on the regular.
