Yesterday's responses about cereal got me thinking about milk. Not surprisingly. It occurred to me that people have very strong opinions about milk. For instance, growing up my family always drank 2% milk. Except my mom, who always drank the powdered skim kind. She still does, actually. Then, when A. and I moved in together, he drank 2% for awhile, too, even though he's a whole milk kinda guy. He only drank the 2% because I was the one doing the grocery shopping. Left to his own devices, he always goes for whole milk. Or, even better, heavy cream.
At some point, I gave in and now we just drink whole milk all the time. It's not exactly a hardship, you know? I haven't had 2% milk in awhile, but I suspect it would not be so tasty to me now.
What say you, poppets? Skim, 2%, whole, chocolate? Which milk does your body good?
Cheese does my body good! It was once milk, so it counts, right? :-) I love cheese so much my husband gives me cheese for my birthday.
ReplyDeleteCheese, yogurt, more cheese, any kind of cheese. If it's going to be milk it has to be whole milk. Otherwise it just tastes like someone watered the milk down. Whole raw milk, no heat treatment, homogenization or any other adulteration. So far it's cows milk only, but going to go look at dairy goat kids today. So it might be goat milk by next spring.
ReplyDeleteSkim. All the way. I loathe whole milk...and don't really "drink milk" anyway, to be honest. I'll have it over cereal and in my tea...but I still like the skim. We had whole milk the other day because a friend brought it over and it was sooooo rich. Delicious...but not something I could do all the time.
ReplyDeleteI love that mdvelazquez gets cheese for her birthday! That's hilarious! I enjoy 2%. Skim is too watery & whole is a bit too sticky. I also like almond milk if cow's milk isn't setting well with my stomach that day...sometimes it doesn't.

ReplyDeleteMilk and I have a super weird relationship. Milk - just regular old grocery store milk has a funny taste to it which has turned me off to milk since I became a vegetarian and unlike hamburgers adn bacon, the love never returned :P I always call the flavor "cow" but I've found that organic milk doesn't have that same flavor - maybe because it's fresher, I don't know - but either way, I'll only drink organic milk and only 1% because, for a person who spent years drinking rice milk, even 2% is like drinking butter. :P
ReplyDeleteI grew up drinking 2% and somewhere in adulthood I found 1% and started drinking that. I am not strict about the milk I drink, I guess I never really thought about the context of my milk drinking, but, I will say this, I LOVE milk. I drink at least a glass of milk everday...it's good for you.
ReplyDeleteWe're normally in the 2% camp but lately with the ice cream maker running at full speed we've had a lot of whole milk in the fridge and the 2% is no where to be found!
ReplyDeleteBlech.
ReplyDeleteLove all things made with milk, but drinking it all by itself is absolutely out of the question.
I prefer skim, husband prefers whole, so when we got married we compromised; we now drink 2%. I'm not a big milk drinker; I get my calcium from cheese and yogurt instead.
ReplyDeleteWhole raw Jersey milk is unbelievably good. I want a cow.
ReplyDeleteWhole milk for tea.
ReplyDeleteSkim milk to drink.
Soy milk for cereal.
Any of the above to cook.
Jenny
So...does that mean that given the opportunity A. drinks heavy cream in place of milk. Because I find that thought rather terrifying.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I drink fat-free. Grew up on 2% but now even that seems too heavy.
My roomie James drinks whole milk like its water. He loves it so much he can drink two gallon within three days.
ReplyDeleteMe i drink whole too but only a 1/2 gallon usually lasting 4 days.
I grew up on Carnation powdered skim milk. For a taste treat sometimes we would have Milk Man with the "kiss of cream". For awhile, as an adult I did whole milk cause I could, now it's 2%. Some times I add evaporated milk to it as that was also a treat when we were kids growing up.
ReplyDeleteI grew up on powdered since we lived in another country and a good clean source of milk was difficult to find.
ReplyDeleteWe currently drink organic pastured raw milk from a local farm. We generally skim some of the cream off to make our own butter, so we probably drink 2-3%, sometimes whole.
I'm not a big milk drinker, just in my coffee. I'm actually lactose intolerant so I drank soy for quite a while, until we got changed to raw milk. No more lactose problems for me.
