So much for that computer.
(In conclusion, insert your expletive of choice here--I used them all.)
Update: Never mind. I don't know how or why, but somehow during my random messing around with boot screens and strange blinky-cursor screens in which I could not use the mouse (what is this, 1988?), the computer got itself back together again. And despite the ominous "physical memory dump" message, everything seems to be intact. Three cheers for dumb luck! Emphasis on the dumb.

I hate those. I have a good friend, who is a bit of a computer nerd. He's also busy writing up his statistics PhD. Being a nerd, he has a fancy system in place that backs up EVERYTHING on this hard drive at 00:00 every night. However, one fine spring morning a wailing and a gnashing of teeth was heard (I believe there may even have been rending of garments, but I wasn't there). Turns out, due to some gremlin in the electrical system both yes, BOTH his internal hard drive and the backup were fried. I think he may have cried. *I'm off to burn copious amount of DVD backups now* I feel your pain and send you good thoughts!
ReplyDeleteNow, don't you feel soooo purged ?
ReplyDeleteNothing like a good start over, is there? Computers suck sometimes.
My word verification is 'vendeth'.
Appropriate to have death in it ,yes?
Oh that is terrible! Nothing like to blue screen of death to strike fear in your heart first thing in the morning. Major bummer.
ReplyDeleteOOOOO, that stinks! Time to get a Mac, I finally broke down and did and it's much better!
ReplyDeleteWe have a backup system that comes on every morning at 3am and backs up all of our information on all of our computers to two different locations and to a place far far away as well. I have tons of important information on here that would be truly aweful if it was lost.
I feel my brain has a "Physical Memory Dump" every so often and I can't reboot it.
ReplyDeleteGlad that it was only a scare from your computer, and not the real thing. Whew!
I assume you took this ominous moment as a suggestion to back up your data.
ReplyDeleteIf not - go back up your data.
Glad you didn't get dumped.
I have seen that several times on my older xp desktop, and even once on my vista laptop. It looks scary but seems to be benign. I was the managing editor of a computer magazine here in Canada and one thing you can count on with computers: they sometimes get their knickers in a knot. Over and over and over again, you learn that computers are such dumb boxes. I remember the first time I got that message I freaked, but then noticed nothing happened. But it always makes me feel the immediate urge to do a full backup :-)
ReplyDeleteI have had a computer disaster or two of my own doing (like when I accidentally deleted my whole blog), but what you're describing sounds like PC hell. So glad to be a Mac user. Seen those commercials? They're funny because they're true!
