I've been thinking a lot about clothes lately. Mostly because mine have become so annoying. I am officially in Maternity Wear. And let me say this about maternity pants: They always feel like they're falling off. Seriously, I spend all my time yanking my pants up. It's very attractive, I'm sure. Even MORE attractive? When I wear A.'s old clothes for manual labor, so I don't ruin my so-called "nice" clothes. Let me tell you, there is nothing more appealing than a woman in an extra-large long sleeved t-shirt and paint-stained men's khakis.
Lord help me.
BUT ANYWAY.
You know what I miss most from my previous, normal wardrobe? My flannel-lined jeans. They are also quite ugly, but at least they stay UP and keep me WARM. And I can't wear them this winter. This saddens me. They are, despite their ugliness, my favorite item of clothing.
I still remember my favorite item of clothing when I was in third grade, by the way. It was this pale yellow sweater with three pastel-colored (blue, pink, and green) bows in the center of it. I wore it for my first day at my new school in Alaska. I was totally stylin'. Yes, in a pale yellow sweater with bows. What can I say? It was the 80s. And I was eight years old.
BUT ANYWAY AGAIN.
I think today I need to stop making it all about me and instead ask YOU to share with ME your most favoritest item of clothing. So what about it, duckies: Woolly socks? Flannel p.j.'s? The perfect t-shirt? Kick-ass boots? What makes you happy whenever you wear it?
I love wearing a pair of (colorful) hand knit socks with my dr. martens. Warm and comfy...
ReplyDeleteMy current most favoritest item of clothing is definitely my wool fuchsia beret. I love it and get really excited when it is cold enough to wear it. It makes me feel like Mary Tyler Moore, although I know some people look at me funny when I wear it. Whatever.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I've heard those maternity pants stay up better once you get bigger. That stretchy panel over your stomach will hold them up once it is stretched tight over your pregnant stomach.
give it a few months - then you will be swearing that there is no way these pants are going to go up and be comfortable - you'll hit that point about 1 month before delivery although they will fit better the bigger you get:) My favorites - jeans and a hoodie with a long sleeved tshirt....
ReplyDeleteSoooo.....when do we get a picture of pregnant Kristin? You know we all want to see. We're voyeurs likes that.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite article of clothing no longer fits. They were silk lined, wide leg, tweed flood pants that looked kick-ass with my calf-high pointy toed boots and a black long sleeved tee. I went from too fat to wear them earlier this year to too skinny to keep them up now.
Dammit.
minus 33 merino wool long undies. Get them you will love them.

I also love my hand knit wool socks. And hand felted wool clogs. Couldn't survive the winter without them.
My advice when pregnant. Get some plus sized sweat pants and live in them. Baggy flannel shirts are great too. At least for around the farm this winter. Nice thing about not having an outside job, dress code is relaxed.
Not sure if I have a favorite outfit now, but I can tell you what my go-to outfit was in 4th grade (like every time it was clean I would wear it again, and if my mom was really on top of the laundry that could mean 3 times a week - scary). I loved my green pants and Roger Rabbit t-shirt with my pink and white suspenders. Can you picture it? Style...
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of suspenders, maybe you should get a pair until the little dude is big enough to help out and hold the pants up for you. Besides, a woman in suspenders really gets a guy's blood pumpin', ya know what I mean? If you don't believe me, just ask your most woodchuck-est neighbor.
ReplyDeleteMy deep, sky blue, polar fleece shirt.
ReplyDeleteMy pajamas and fleece robe. I put the dog out when I get home then get in my PJ'S.
ReplyDeleteYes, yes ... a photograph! We all want one, y'know.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite article of clothing is my black leather jacket; bought it almost 20 years ago now and still love it.
Congrats on post #601; that's a LOT of typing!
(Word verification: zesseweb. What the internet would have been called had it been named after it's REAL inventor, Arnold Zesse.)
I can't believe I typed it's instead of its. Bleh!!
ReplyDelete(Word verification: bacronl. The new manmade wonder fabric made from bacon.)
a deep green ivy print with deep purple violets dress my mom made me using no pattern. i was in 7th grade. it had a self, double ruffle around the neck and down one side. how i wished i would have had a photo of that dress....thanks for your story and memories.
ReplyDeleteif you are willing to part with your flannel jeans or buy another pair, you can turn them into maternity jeans fairly easily - check out this blog - http://sewchic.blogspot.com/2008/08/tutorial-how-to-convert-jeans-into.html
ReplyDeletea tube top makes a good tummy sleeve that you can sew into the jeans instead of making the fabric "tube". just wanted to share that with you in case you hadn't thought of it! this way you can enjoy your jeans this winter!
oh and although your pants will fit better as you get bigger, i found that the saggy butt problem never fully went away grr!
Right now I love my worn out yoga pants. They are just so darn comfortable.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of anything. Know what that means? I need to go shopping.
ReplyDeleteBTW, Target has some good maternity stuff. They just brought in a diffused line from a maternity designer.
Safety-pin the top of the pants to your bra! It worked for me thirty-odd years ago. Suspenders were helpful, also. And then of course, as noted, eventually they fit perfectly without extra help. Mikey
ReplyDeleteThe minute i get home from work or gym i put on my sweat pants from mich women's festival and my sweatshirt from gallaudet swim team.
ReplyDeleteBlack Carhart coat. Levis and flip flops.
ReplyDeleteFlannel shirt of hubby's underneath. Yes I'm a hick.
Anything that doesn't itch.
ReplyDeleteKnee high smartwool socks, they keep me warm warm warm in winter (I can't find any flannel lined jeans). I'd suggest getting a pair (I got mine from REI outlet for $10 a pair).
ReplyDeleteHey, have you not heard of the rubber band trick? I know of pregnant women who continued to wear their normal jeans by looping a rubber band through the waist buttonhole and around the button (leaving the zipper unzipped) and wearing a maternity shirt over it.
ReplyDeleteIt never worked for me because I not only got a big belly, I got a big ass when I was with child. But if you are only growing in your belly (and I suspect you are), give it a try!
I have many favorite items of clothes. And if I sat here and thought about it a bit I could probably come up with some favorites from childhood (a pair of Guess jeans that were striped blue and purple - it was the 80s) and my teen years (denim dress - it was the 90s!) or my 20s (khaki capris - it was the new millenium!), but today I have on one of my favorite Tshirts and it does make me so happy.
ReplyDeleteMalicious and happy.
It's a black Tshirt with a gray print on the front of, like, 20 different torture devices (needles, hammers, saws, pliers, etc) and on the back it says, "We have ways of making you talk."
Wearing it under a blazer makes me feel secretly evil.
And now this comment is absurdly long. You're welcome.
