An Ode to the Humble Oreo

There are some foods beloved in childhood that have not stood the test of time or the maturation of my adult taste buds. Case in point: Kraft Macaroni and cheese. Loved that stuff when I was a kid. Now it just tastes like chemicals. ORANGE chemicals. Yum.

However, there is one food that I still love with the same passion I had when I was a child. And that is the Oreo.

Oreos were a staple in my house when I was growing up. Our big cookie jar would just fit one entire package, and a full package was purchased every week. This seems like a lot, but there were five of us. And a few of us (I include myself here) were definite cookie monsters.

I don't buy Oreos very often anymore. Mostly because when I do, I eat the whole package by myself within a couple of days. I can somewhat justify this* by saying that this is the only time I will voluntarily drink a glass of milk. It's a rule I have for myself: I must drink the small glass of milk used to dunk the Oreos (until they're soft and mushy, but not falling apart--it's a delicate balance). Therefore, Oreos mean calcium. It's for THE BABY!

Sure.

BUT ANYWAY.

Enough about me. What about you, duckies? Is there a beloved childhood food that you still love? Or one that you now loathe?

* Except not really, because I am not completely delusional.

  1. Mmm Oreos.....now I have to go buy some. DAMN YOU!
Things from my childhood that I still love? Well at home (Zimnbabwe) we get these MSG and flavouring chips called 'Thingz' I. Love. Them. Also, similar kind of MSG, salt and flavouring chips called "Chicken Flings'. Ditto. Could live on them for at least a week! :D
As for things I used to like, and don't any more? Most of those pre-made meals and stuff. Chemicals. Yuk.
Something I've discovered that I like, which I never used to like? Beetroot. Can't get enough of it. Weird hey?

  3. Oh my, Oreos...I had tried to forget about them! And you had to go and remind me!!!! I have tried so hard over the past years to really watch what food we eat...trying to stick to whole foods, either grown by us or grown locally. Living in the country has made that much easier. But, I do admit, there is always an open bag of peanut M&Ms in my cabinet!!!! Oh, Oreos....how I miss thee!!!!!

  4. Oh yeah Oreos will always be a my favorite. And the only thing from childhood that I can't stand now is spaghettios, bought some recently for my Grandson and I took a bite and thought I ate that stuff?

  5. Never liked Oreos as a kid, still don't. It was homemade cookies or we didn't have any. Donuts are my downfall, liked them as a kid, still like them. My mom cooked almost everything from scratch and she grew most of our vegetables and chickens and pigs at home. Beef came from my grandparents farm. My father hunted and fished so we always had venison and local fish. I guess I was very spoiled eating some really great food. I still don't like processed crap. Tastes disgustingly like fake food to me.

  7. I just rediscovered peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches after years of thinking I was too grown up to eat such food. Lovely.

  8. As a kid, I loved Nutty Bars, made (I think) by Little Debbie. One day, I saw some for sale in a vending machine and thought I'd buy some, feeling all nostalgic. They were horrible. Not anywhere near as good as I remembered. In fact, most packaged foods I eat now aren't.

A childhood food that I still love? Fried okra. My father used to make big batches of it. One time he made a giant batch, but by the time he sat down to eat some, he discovered that my brother, sister, and I had eaten ALL of it. I can't eat okra any other way (mostly because it tastes horrible any other way - I think the fried-ness covers up its not too good flavor)

  9. I am one of the few not in the Oreo camp....to me, they're just sweet and nothing else. I don't taste chocolate, I don't taste vanilla. I'm just eating to the beat of a different drummer, or something like that, I guess....
I was a weird child; I loved olives and capers...still do. I also used to eat weiners cold, straight out of the fridge. I don't do THAT anymore.

  10. Childhood comfort foods that still comfort: nutter butters and brown sugar Poptarts. Something I liked as kid but very much don't now: MILK. And Kool Aid.

  11. OMG YES about the Spaghettio's. Ugh! AND the Nutty Bars - it's not so much that those taste bad, it's just that they don't taste as good as I remember.

  12. Toward the end of my Masters Degree program I started eating peanut butter Oreos to deal with the stress. Now? I can't touch them.
I had to go back to the regular variety. :)

  13. Hawaiian Punch. Gah!

I suspect it's because it was made with sugar when I was a child, and now it's corn syrup like everything else.

  14. This makes me laugh. When I was pregnant last year, I LIVED off of Kraft Mac & Cheese. Baby likes science? I also relented and bought some Oreos, and DH then insisted on buying 2 packages every time we went to the store. It's not surprising we both gained the same amount of "pregnancy" weight.

  15. Sadly I can't have too many of the foods I loved in childhood because I grew up in South America, and it's tough to get those things here in NE Ohio. I have my dad bring back a few items every now and then when he travels, and I can occationally source ingredients in Cleveland. Luckily I've been able to travel down to Colombia on several occasions to enjoy few of my fave chidhood treats. I'm happy only enjoying them every now and then. As an adult I've lost my love of sweet things so I can only handle them every so often anyways.
