Last night, after a filling but nonetheless not entirely satisfying meal*, I wanted something for dessert. But there really wasn't anything dessertish (look! a new word!) around. Oh, there were canned peaches and pears, but I don't consider fruit a real dessert. Because I am not cosmopolitan (or healthy) enough for that. Sometimes I'll have A. make cocoa and that will be my dessert, since he makes it with whole milk and a LOT of cocoa powder so it's pretty rich. But I didn't want that, either. So I went with my fall-back, there's-nothing-for-dessert dessert: A spoonful of peanut butter with chocolate chips smushed into the top.
It ain't pretty, but it does satisfy the desire.
Please tell me I'm not the only one out there with such a craze for dessert that I will resort to this sort of thing. Some of you MUST have desperation desserts of your own, right? RIGHT?
* A weirdly tasty concoction from my Spain cookbook of basically cornmeal mush with ham, bacon, garlic, paprika, and caraway, of all things. Best of all, though, was the note that it's often "garnished" with fried pork loin or chorizo. Because it's always good to squeeze in yet ANOTHER form of pork. This is one reason we really loved our trip to Spain.
sugar bread.... from when I spent time with my grandad and granny.

I heaping spoon full of Nutella does the trick for me on occasion... (More often than not)
ReplyDeleteCaraway? That sounds like a very interesting dish! I think I would love Spain...
ReplyDeleteHalf-ass desserts, hmmm...we always seem to have a bar of dark chocolate and ginger cookies on hand. Does that count? Those appear with regularity!
Crackers (any kind) spread with peanut butter (drizzled with honey if it's available) and sprinkled with cinnamon count as dessert for me, many a time. As will a handful of nuts mixed with a handful of chocolate chips if both are in the cupboard. Any kind of nuts, any kind of chocolate chips.
ReplyDeleteBut no fruit. Fruit is NOT dessert unless it's been baked into a pie or some sort of crisp or cobbler. Then it counts :-)
I once read somewhere that if you dip graham crackers into key lime yogurt, it's just like key lime pie. Don't believe it for a minute. I tried it. Once. Never again.
Peanut butter Captain crunch!
ReplyDeleteI've been off sweets for awhile. My problem is that as soon as I start eating desserts then I don't want to stop. So ... I don't start. Your no dessert, dessert sounds like heaven to me.
ReplyDeleteFrozen Kool-Whip will take the place of ice cream in an emergency.
ReplyDeleteI like crackers with peanut butter and chocolate chips, so there you go. Or Nutella, as someone else mentioned. Mmmm.
ReplyDeletePeanut butter and honey on bread or apples sometimes does it.
ReplyDeleteWhip cream from the can (administered directly down the gullet) does, too.
Honey on apples.
A handful of chocolate chips from the bulk container.
TWO handfuls of chocolate chips from the bulk container.
Graham cracker spread with peanut butter and topped with a hershey bar. Top with another graham cracker spread with peanut butter to glue it all together. Yum!
ReplyDeleteThere is absolutely nothing wrong with peanut butter and chocolate chips. Sometimes I melt the chips and dip pretzels in them. It's all about the chocolate.
ReplyDeleteWe lived in a resort town, closed up for the winter, when I was expecting my first. I stocked the freezer with dessert items and junk foods because we had no convenience store options when the cravings hit. Hostess cupcakes, mainly. Ew. Did I really eat those?
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great dessert to me, especially if you make "a" spoonful turn into "several" spoonfuls!
ReplyDeleteIf I'm really hard up for something sweet and creamy, I usually stick a bit of powdered sugar into a teensy bowl of sour cream. Mmm. Makes a great fruit dip, but is satisfying on its own.
ReplyDeletePeanut butter and maple syrup mixed and heated. Eaten with apple slices, in the tradition of my husband's family. It's like creamy peanut brittle.
Chocolate buttercream frosting comes together in 90 seconds, and the addition of an egg and a bit of flour gives you a batter for a microwave brownie.
There are a lot of desperation solutions in this house.
Wow, how have I never thought of this before? I sometimes go with mini-marshmallows and chocolate chips. Sometimes I microwave it for a bit to get it all soft and smushy. But I am definitely trying the peanut butter version.
ReplyDeleteI keep cookie dough balls in the freezer for such times.
