Your boys are adorable! Is your collie a smooth-coat? (Is that what the shorthaired ones are called?) What is that breed's temperament like? (We're thinking about getting another dog so I'm asking around.)
Karen: Yup, she's a smooth collie. That brown and white coloring is called a sable, in case you need to know. The MiL has a rough sable and a smooth tri-color, which is a black and white coloring. The temperament of all of them with the kids is really good, although Mia (that's ours and the one pictured) is pretty much the best dog ever for kids.
I think if you're looking into the purebreds like these, it's good to keep in mind that the activity level of the dog and their temperament might vary a lot even within breeds, depending on blood lines. The line these three came from are all excellent hunters and really need to be in a place with space to roam. But there are other collie lines that are much more sedate, I think.
I would definitely recommend collies if you're looking for a good breed for kids and you have the room. I would also recommend going with a smooth. The roughs are gorgeous, but OH MY GOD the grooming. It's a full-time job.
Collies are great but I'm a Labrador Retriever fan. Both are excellent temperament and great with kids. I never knew about the smooth coat collies till I started following your blog.
And there it is-the best life ever for kids and dogs!
