So a funny thing happened on Thursday. I seem to have produced this small child. Eleven days before anticipated. And he is . . . well. He's pretty awesome. Details to come, of course.
No photo yet, because I don't have the patience to mess around with uploading things right now. But thank you all for your welcome to our son. He's fine; I'm fine; A. is fine.
And Mia is very, very excited.
More later . . .

Baby
Kristin had a 7 pound 9 ounce baby boy at 4:35pm on Thursday.
Both Kristin and baby are doing very well, and the baby is out of the nursery and is with its mother in the room. Baby is nursing successfully.
The delivery was natural in nature, and went quickly as such things are measured. Kristin did not take any painkillers, and I think that she was pleased with how things went.

Going Wild
A. is on a roll lately with the killing of small animals. He has taken to walking the dogs in the woods up back and bringing his shotgun. This has resulted in a squirrel that the dogs obligingly treed for him on Sunday, and a rabbit on Monday. That he flushed from a bush himself because the dogs were too busy chasing squirrels to notice the rabbit when they charged past the bush.
They can be kind of stupid, sometimes.
ANYWAY.
This hunting prowess means, of course, that we have been having wild game for dinner this week. A. took charge of the squirrel, boiling it in a couple of changes of water before pulling the meat apart. This method was prudent because for one thing, it was a really big squirrel--an old male--which tend to be kind of tough. And for another thing, it allowed him to get rid of whatever shot might be left in the squirrel so nobody broke a tooth on a small piece of shot in their dinner. That kind of detracts from one's gustatory enjoyment.
ANYWAY AGAIN.
He chucked the squirrel into a soup with a ham bone and various vegetables. And it was good. We've had squirrel before. Provided it's prepped properly, it's really a lot better than you would think the equivalent of a large rat with a bushy tail would be.
The rabbit was made into hasenpfeffer last night, by me. And not just because hasenpfeffer is a really fun word to say. It also happens to be some good eatin'. Personally, I've never gone wrong braising any kind of meat in half a bottle of red wine.
I think tonight we'll go back to boring old ground beef, though. It lacks the excitement of a meal that was running around mere hours before being eaten, but then again, it also lacks the possibility of chewing on lead shot. And there is something to be said for that.

Cheese--It's What's For Breakfast
Do you ever find yourself standing in the kitchen, staring into space, contemplating all your options, and then deciding that a piece of cheese folded into bread is about all you can rouse yourself to "make" for breakfast?
Yeah. Me, too.
Yeah. Me, too.

You're Welcome, Saints Fans
I'm pretty sure the Saints won because I actually watched the entire game. I don't actually remember the last time I watched a whole football game; possibly in the 1990s when the Packers played in the Super Bowl. And of course, here in the eastern time zone, watching the whole game meant that I stayed up until 10 p.m., which is way past my bed time.
Watching the whole game also meant that I sat in a chair for four hours. This probably doesn't seem like anything very special to those of you who are not carrying around a full grown baby in your innards. Just trust me that no matter how comfortable the chair, after four hours, my pregnant back was very happy to get home and get to bed.
So, as you can see, my endurance and devotion was obviously recognized by some kind of Higher Power devoted to football and rewarded by allowing the Saints to win. Well, my endurance, and that great interception in the second half that led to a touchdown for the Saints. I can give them some small credit, I guess.

Connections
I must admit that I do not give a rat's ass about football (or any other sport, for that matter), but I will watch at least some of today's Super Bowl game. Because you all know where my mom is from. This means I have a family obligation to put on my Mardi Gras beads and cheer for the much-beleaguered Saints.
Happy Super Bowl Sunday. Now go have some chips and dip, or other gut-busting food of your choice. After all, that's what today is REALLY about.
