A Sad Disappointment

Don't you just hate it when your chickens stop laying and you have to start buying eggs? Like, with money? At the store?

Yeah. Me too.

Are you totally sure they have stopped laying? In the last couple of months we have removed from our coop 2 egg filled snakes (each between 6 and 7 feet long). First clue...egg production appeared to drop.

I really enjoy your blog. What a great attitude you have about the sometimes exhausting and inconvenient country life. A sense of humor is as valuable as electricity out here!

It is totally wrong when someone doesn't get laid.

Alrighty now, Kristen has another fun task ahead of her ......snake scouting /hunting. Woohoo. One good thing about telling so many people about what is going on with you is..folks have all kinds of answers, right or wrong. It is very interesting to learn from each other. Or maybe they are molting?

Yeah, they're due to start molting, since they're about a year old now. For those of you who don't know (and you could have included me in this group until, oh, yesterday, when A. schooled me on chicken ways), hens molt (shed all their feathers) once a year. They don't lay while they're molting. And A. said it could be as long as a month. A whole month without my own eggs. BOOOO.

Boo! When I was down at my dad's a week or two ago, they gave me some farm eggs they'd gotten from the Amish. I ran out of them yesterday, and this morning I had to go back to my pale anemic store-bought eggs. The difference really is amazing.

Mine too. We figured it was the heat? The babies are starting to lay, though, so we haven't had to go to the store.

ew. snakes.

Our slowdown did turn out to be another snake - barely 6 feet long this one. Dh relocated him to (another part of) the country after smacking the back of his head to make him cough up the egg he was in the process of swallowing.

Ewwwwwwwwwww. I had to scrub the snake slobber off that egg!
