And the Verdict Is . . .
Cubby on his cafeteria lunch: "It was great. I had a little cup with mushed-up strawberries, like applesauce. And apple slices, but not the apple slices with the red sugar on them."
Points for avoiding the red-food-dye sugar apples, Cubby, but those strawberries sound gross.
Charlie on his cafeteria lunch: "I got to have ketchup on my chicken sandwich. And I had chocolate milk."
Obviously, they enjoyed the many ways in which sugar is presented at the cafeteria.
They asked if they could do it again. I told them they could buy a lunch if they had the money, but both of them opted out of "Nachos Supreme*" today, instead declaring they would wait until spaghetti day. So it's back to Mom's tuna salad sandwiches today, with the promise of cafeteria spaghetti on Thursday.
Yum.
* I don't know what makes them supreme, but I bet the "cheese" is that bright-orange liquid stuff. Mmm.

Such a shame, the things fed to kids. Although, I'm fairly certain I had these things too, while eating at the cafeteria in school.
I guess the novelty hasn't worn off, yet. Maybe the boys decreasing funds will hasten that.

Strangely, some of it sounds like a perverse attempt to provide a healthy lunch that kids raised on box mac and cheese will eat. Hide the fruits and vegetables under a sugar coating. And remember, in the Reagan era, ketchup WAS a vegetable.

What red-food-dye sugar apples are these? I've never heard of such a thing. Is this another indication I'm old and out of touch?
Drew: So far as I can understand from Cubby's description, they're apple slices that have been coated in dyed-red sugar. The idea, I suppose is that it will get kids to eat the apples that might not usually take them, but frankly, I'd rather they just eat some candy than defile an apple in such a way. Gross.
weirdly, i have really been looking forward to learning how this story came out.
