Do you see how I cleverly spelled out the bad word so the kiddies wouldn't know what we're talking about? I'm sly that way.
It's Friday! And what better day to talk about spirituous beverages? We believe in hard liquor here at Blackrock. We have a good collection of various types of liquors, sure to satisfy any taste. Except tastes that run to vodka. We don't drink vodka.
But anything else, we got you covered. Gin? You have come to Gin Central, my friend. Rum? Yes, light and dark. Bourbon? Have a seat with Old Granddad there. Campari? Nasty, but yes, we have it. Whiskey? Your choice of four different varieties. Sherry, Cointreau, creme de cacao, applejack, tequila? Check, check, check, check, and check. We got it all.
Now, with this vast and impressive collection of liquor, you'd think we'd have a full-on bar. Like the one my mom's parents in New Orleans had at their house. It was a four foot by six foot piece of furniture that housed all the libations one could hope for. It was cool.
But we don't have a bar like that. Nor do we have a proper liquor cabinet. We have a cabinet, but it is woefully inadequate to contain our wealth of bottles.
The liquor? AWESOME. The cabinet? LAME.
Clearly, this cabinet is not doing the job. So we have an addition to the liquor cabinet. An annex, if you will.
Now that's class.
Yes, we store our extra bottles in a box. And when the box gets full, on the kitchen floor. Next to the dog toys. Awesome.
My father, who is an amateur carpenter extraordinaire, is at this very moment working on remedying this pathetic situation. He's building us a wine rack/liquor cabinet. But in the meantime, I will have to pick my gin up off the floor. That will not, however, stop me from enjoying many of these.

And if you don't put bitters in your gin and tonic, get thee to the store, buy some Angostura bitters, and shake in several drops. It will change your life. And also, make your G&T a very pretty pink. Also also, do not give me any shit for using diet tonic water. I get enough of that from A. and the MiL, who obviously wish me to weigh 300 pounds.
Now before you start your weekend, tell me: What's your favorite alcoholic drink? I don't want to feel like a lush all by myself here.

I'm not giving you shit about it, just curious. What exactly do they take out of water to make it diet water?

The other thing I'm curious about is: Do you drink so many gin and tonics that diet tonic water is making the difference between your current girlish figure and 300 pounds? I think A and MiL should worry less about the tonic and more about the gin.
I used to drink Jack and Diet Coke. Then, vodka and cranberry. Then I decided there was too much sugar in the juice, so I drank vodka and DIET tonic, thank you very much. These days I'm back to the Diet Coke, but with rum in it. Mmmmmm. The only way to drink soda, which is why I don't drink soda during the day. Although do you think anyone would notice?
Also, my mom gave me a bar from her house. It has a granite top and a wine rack, but all it has is booze, no wine. I think it is currently housing some Jack Daniel's, rum, vodka, tequila, and...um...I think I need to make a stop at the liquor store, actually. It's been a long week. (She has another bar, which was the first piece of furniture she and my dad bought when they got married. She said I could have it, but I didn't want to take it yet; I said I'll put my name on the back of it, if you know what I'm saying.)
Well, Drew. It goes something like this: The tonic in one G&T accounts for approximately 150 calories. If I have two G&Ts (not unheard of), that's an extra 300 calories. And I would rather expend those 300 calories on ice cream, frankly. All the women will understand the careful reasoning behind this.
I think this must be weird, but I don't have an alltime favourite drink. Depends on my mood, what I'm eating, the weather, all that stuff. Like, sometimes I want red wine, sometimes a pina colada. And G&T is a mighty fine drink too. With LOTs of lime.
Anything with gin... "Gin and Sin" being one of my all-time favorites, but too many calories.
Hate vodka, but we've been drinking something lately with vodka, tonic water and "Parma" which is a pom liquer that doesn't taste like hfcs.
And in the hot summer Pims and gingerale. Refreshing. Oh, and Mike's Hard Cranberry when wake surfing.
Um, I guess it's obvious we're former Marines, because we're drinkers apparently!
Actually, thanks for a good post topic... I'm going to take a picture of our tres cool bar (thrift store find) tonight. And sadly, our liquor collection makes yours look like a pittance. :)

Meadowlark: I haven't actually put my name on anything. My mom said it once and I was disgusted. Since then, when she tells me to take something but I don't want to take it from her, I tell her to just put my name on the back!

My maternal grandparents (Okies and Indians) always did that. There were 13 kids on one side and 11 kids on the other. As grandparents they only had 5 kids, but I guess the habit stuck. I'll have to look into that tradition.

Whoo! Gin and tonic, that's my girl! I've only ever found one other person that loves gin as much as I do...and sadly I moved two states away from her.
I've never tried the bitters in it before, but that bottle of Tanqueray on my fridge is calling out to me now.
Meadowlark, former Marine and former drinker here. Not that I don't drink at all, I just don't do as well the morning after as I did when I was 23, so it happens less often.
If this is going to turn into a picture thread, where we all show our bars, I'll need to do: The big one in the basement with the glasses and other hardware, the small one in the dining room with the marble top we set everything out on when entertaining, and the closet under the basement stairs where we keep all the bottles.

Well, now, this is ironic, considering that I just got my 14-y-o daughter registered for high school this morning, and one of the things we had to do at registration was acknowledge that we got/read a copy of the school district's behavior policy, including the section on not letting your kid drink/have/sell/be anywhere near L-I-Q-U-O-R.
And is everyone impressed with that run-on sentence? Perhaps I need to go back to high school composition class...
You realize that you and I are clearly soul mates. Except for the bitters part. I mean, I will try this, but as of yet, I've been an ice, then fresh lime juice then Bombay Sapphire gin then DIET tonic girl.
But I will try your bitters. If just so I can imagine that my booze soul mate lives on a farm about which I'm very jealous.
Oh, and to answer the question, my favorite/preferred/only drink is a gin and tonic, served up in the manner previously described and then repeated until I run shirtless through the yard.
Or whatever.
And so you don't feel like a lush, I have a One Liter per vacation week minimum.
Wow! Crazy! Just the other day I went to the store to buy tonic water (for very different reasons) and EVERY single kind had tons of sugar in it, so I ended up buying the bad diet tonic water, too. LOL.
They put sugar in everything even water now, it SUCKS. No wonder everyone is having weight issues. :P

Fav alcohol you ask? without a doubt peppermint schnaps. They are really good with milk or even hot chocolate.
Otherwise i'll drink Strawberry Daquiri's or Margaritas.

Also, I like wine that is real sweet. Such as Ethiopian honey wine or american honey mead. Red wine-cabernet sauvignon.
No beer at all....i did provide the family with hempen ale made from......hemp seeds one year. *grin*

Finny, I don't like gin, but I could keep some around for you. So ... will that be the front yard or the back yard?
Athy, it's not the sugar it's the corn syrup. I've been trying to find ginger ale made with sugar, and all I keep finding locally is ginger beer. Totally different. And I'm not going to pay $20 for a 12-pack to mail order it.
Oh, and Tammy, do the schnapps with chocolate milk instead of hot chocolate. Tastes just like girl scout Thin Mints. Those are dangerous.

one time i mistaked my dads g&t for my mineral water at the age of 10 or so. i still don't like g&t's but if i had a favorite drink it would probably be jack and coke but i prefer straight shots of tequila.call me hard core, i just don't get sipping a drink.
Merlot is my favorite drink of all time, but I've recently started sipping small amounts of whiskey, straight. My favorite is Wild Turkey, American Honey. Give it a try. You won't regret it.
By the way, I'd love to see photos of your new bar cabinet when it's ready. I'm looking for a solution myself.
