Turns out I didn't need to use the dryer at Blackrock the other day after all, since I had to do a load of laundry immediately after arriving at my parents' house. There was a tragedy in my suitcase involving some jars of homemade applesauce and pickled jalapenos. It was ugly. It was messy. I will probably be finding shards of glass in my underwear all week.
So, my thanks to the careful luggage handlers of Delta Airlines! But at least the pickled beets made it intact. That would have been a real nightmare.

Heh! Someone once commented on the fact that there are always jars of something or another packed into my suitcase... they thought it was odd. Glad to know I'm not the only odd one around - I don't think packing canned goods around the country is all that normal for most folks.
So glad to hear the beets didn't break too, and sorry about the rest of it, how disappointing.
What a bummer! The worst things I've had break in my suitcase were several bottles of beer. I found glass in my clothes and shoes for weeks!
Next time you go traveling, Kristin, I'll get you some bubble wrap. The jalapeno/applesauce combo doesn't sound appealing at all.
At least the plane didn't overshoot the airport by 150 miles while the pilots chatted about work conditions!
I won't get into the "me too" stories about Delta - but let's just say they're on our Do Not Fly list.

I have only had a bottle of tequila break in my suitcase. Let's just say... I knew it... as did anyone within 100 yards of baggage claim. A shame about your applesauce and peppers. Were they "candied jalapenos" per chance? If so... that would be a true travesty. Ugh... beets : (.
What a mess. You poor thing. The trip can only get better.

I learned long ago to always pack anything breakable or liquid or sticky or creamy inside of zip lock bags. That way if they break or squish at least the ick is contained. I learned this the hard way after a nasty hairspray and hand cream incident in the late 80s. The lids came off of the hairspray and something managed to push against the sprayer. Everything in my suitcase was coated in sticky stinky hairspray - the whole brand new can. What that didn't get was covered in hand cream as half the bottle leaked out.
Some things I just threw away rather than try to recover.
Since then, I've learned the joys of traveling with zip lock bags. They come in every size you can imagine needing and are reasonably reusable. I have several that I keep in my suitcase that have been reused for years.
