You all know by now that I would choose cake over pie any day when it comes to dessert. But I will say this for pie: Hot apple pie with melted sharp cheddar cheese on top makes a kick-ass breakfast.
So, is the cheese-on-pie thing really where it's at? Because while I love cheese and pie very much as separate entities, I've never sacked up and merged them together.
J.T.: Do you like salty and sweet together? Then sack up (as much as is possible for a female, that is) and merge the twain. It's my favorite way to eat apple pie.
But it must be a somewhat sharp, salty cheese. Mild cheddar, much as I love it, doesn't provide enough salt for this use.
I've heard that is a big tradition in Maine, I think. This reminds me of the tv show Pushing Daisies (takes place at a pie diner) where they talk about baking gruyere right into the pear pie crust. It sounds good, but at the same time, I like to eat my pie with liberal amounts of whipped cream and/or ice cream, and the cheese doesn't really mesh with that.
I used to be tied for cake or pie person, but now pie has won my loyalty. I still like cake, but only on occasion.
I think cheddar with apple pie is an Eastern thing, and most people out west here (besides my family) think it's weird. I felt so vindicated when the apple pie at one of the taverns in Williamsburg came with a slab of sharp cheddar. The combination is my very favorite breakfast. I'll hide away my dessert slice if there isn't going to be any left over so I can have it the next morning. Heaven indeed!

And I was just feeling all proud of myself for having 8 grain bread.
Way to ruin the most important meal of the day.
