A.P.D.--The Sleeping In Edition

Charlie tried to convince me at 4:10 this morning that it was time to get up. I strongly disagreed (my internal response was something along the lines of, "HELL NO") and then spent the next hour getting him back to sleep*. As I was lying there in my bed, wide awake and waiting for his next escape attempt, I reflected on how drastically my notion of "sleeping in" has changed recently.

In college, sleeping in meant 10 p.m.

When I worked and got up at 6 a.m., sleeping in meant 9 a.m.

When I had my first kid, who slept until at least seven most mornings, sleeping in meant 8 a.m.

And now? Now if Charlie sleeps until 6 a.m., I feel as if I've won the lottery. And on the banner mornings when A. gets up with Charlie, I indulge myself by staying in bed until 7 a.m.

Oh, the luxury.

And now it's your turn, my lovelies. What time do you habitually wake up and what do you consider sleeping in?

* He did eventually go back to sleep around 5 a.m. And then woke up for the day at 6:10 a.m. Super.

Workday wake up time: 7 am. Sleep in time: 9:30 am. But when Chester was a puppy (if there is any comparison with Charlie), wake up time was 5 am. Mary in MN

Having kids destroyed my ability to sleep. Youngest is 23 (and has her own place now) and I still don't sleep more than 3 to 5 hours at a time. B.C. (before children)I could sleep 8 to 10 hours in a stretch, nothing ever woke me up. What's up with that? Here's hoping perpetual insomnia doesn't happen to you.

Depends. Heavy exercise day - 6:30. Any other day could be anywhere from 4:45 to 5:30. I should be around for Charlie. However, there's that little problem of longer recovery time. Always, trade offs.

Sleeping in for me would be around 9:30am.
Our tot sleeps until about 7:30-8:00am most mornings. I guess I hit the jackpot - my niece and nephew both wake at 6:00am. And then there's you and that offensive wakeup time of 4:10am (absolutely HELL NO).
I agree with Sheila. Having the Tot basically destroyed any ability I have to sleep heavily and for long lengths. In college I could sleep 10 hours and woke refreshed and beautiful. And thin.
Now? I drag ass outta bed, hollerin' and cussing under my breath.
It's just that there is so much more coffee being consumed now, y'know?

I appreciate 830 as sleeping in. I get up either 630 or 715 for work, occasionally 515 (if I go to the gym) so in real set awakening.

But 415 is never okay. Sorry Charlie!

Sleeping in for me means whatever time I naturally wake up. Basically on my own terms and not being awakened. If someone wakes me up even if I'm sleeping in until 10:00 AM which I never do, I don't feel like I "slept in". So I think fo rme it's perspective. Left alone my natural wake up time is between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM.

I'm sorry to tell you but when you become old your clock just shifts. I love to sleep until 6:30 but am not surprised when I'm wide awake at 4:00. Cocka doodle frickin' doo.

Yeah, I'm afraid that working on a farm actually does mean getting up in the dark. Always. Regardless of the time of year.

So, now I'm trained to wake up at 5 and be on the road by 6, working by 7.

I avoid complaining about it because of all the people who'll be all, "Well, you wanted to work on a farm, idiot." and all that, to the point where I don't really mind the getting up early anymore.

But sleeping undisturbed until 7am?

THAT SOUNDS LIKE FUCKING HEAVEN.
