It somehow came to me last week when I was at the grocery store with the three younger children that we should find some different kinds of root beer and do a taste test. I got three "fancy" brands of root beer and we did the taste test on Sunday as part of our birthday celebration for our new teenager.
The contenders.
I was just going to have everyone try them to see which they liked best. But, my family being what it is, we ended up having this whole big thing with everyone taking notes and expounding upon foam and "root notes" and I don't know what all. It was pretty funny.
We did the tasting without them knowing which was which, as is proper, so then they all guessed which number corresponded with each brand. No one got any of them right, which was interesting, but all of them liked IBC the best. That's handy, since that's one of the brands available at the tiny store in the village.
It was fun, and everyone else is already planning what we can taste-test on their birthdays. Any suggestions?

How about ice cream? That would be a tasty comparison : walmart versus Breyers/Bluebunny/ etc and maybe a premium brand?
Or perhaps a clear soda- sprite versus starry versus 7up ( or regional equivalent). Around here there's a green apple soda that popular.
"It somehow came to me. . . " Clearly this was divine intervention. What a brilliant idea. We have some serious root beer lovers around here, and this would be a great idea. Other ideas-- potato chips, chocolate (like which % chocolate is best), BBQ sauce. What a fun, fun idea!
I thought about ice cream, but if the results are that anything is way better than Great Value, I am in trouble. Because at the rate my family plows through ice cream, I can't afford more than $7/gallon. :-)
It came to me because I remembered buying one of those fancy brands at that particular store for a kid's Secret Santa recipient last year, and there had been a recent discussion in our house about how everyone loves root beer (except me). It was really fun, which is pretty unusual for me, honestly, so I was very proud of myself. :-)
Oh, potato chips. That's a good one. Bunch of plain brands, or flavors? Hmmm, hard decision.
Great value would win in my house. It really is good! My kids can go through a carton of cookie dough in 1.5 days.
During Covid we held a monthly taste test to try and have something to look forward to. We compared Pringle flavors, licorice, gum, dipping sauce packets from fast food restaurants, tea packets, Oreo flavors and a bunch more that I can’t think of but I’m sure my guys would remember if you need more ideas. It was a lot of fun during some tough times.

Oh, Oreos are a great idea. I'll have to remember that one for my Oreo-loving eldest.
I have this thing about tea, both flavor and strength. American brands have almost no tea in each tea bag, which would show up right away in a timed steeping test. My Irish tea bags would win hands down, at least for the folks who appreciate a good strong "cuppa." Mil
