The Magic of Five Years Old

When a foam build-your-own-superhero-mask from the local library and a floral pillowcase clothespinned to your shirt have transformative powers.

"Mom, wearing this mask and cape really makes me feel like a superhero."

Love it. And him.

Could you actually "borrow" the mask from the library--or is it Cubby's to keep? Mary in MN

Ah, what a joy to be at an age where you don't even think of what others might think of how you look. Certainly does allow for unfettered creativity, something all your children have and will, hopefully, continue have in spades; makes for great photos for all of us as well. You're definitely got the whole positive parenting thing down; congrats!

Mary: It's his. The theme for summer reading at the library this year was superheroes, so they had different crafts related to the theme, including these kits to make foam masks. The pillowcase was ours, though. :-)

Classic. So glad you took a picture and got his quote! Hint: bring this out when he turns 15 or 16 and is bringing a girlfriend home for the first time.
