And So It Begins

With each of my pregnancies, before we knew if we were having a boy or a girl, A. and I would inevitably have the discussion about hair. A. had some reservations about my ability and interest in fixing hair if we had a girl, you see.

He was justified in those reservations. I have very little interest in doing hair, and certainly don't have any skill at it. I can barely manage a regular braid, much less French braids or fishtail braids or any of that other craziness*.

Obviously, this was not an issue for many years. I had three boys, and those three boys all get their heads shaved every month.

But now, of course, I have a girl. And that girl's hair is starting to get a bit long.

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a package of hair ties, barrettes, and bobby pins at the grocery store--for a dollar, because I am allll about the quality--and this morning before church . . .

Can you see it? Do you need a close-up?

I done FIXED that hair. With a purple barrette.

Okay, so it's a pretty lame attempt at hair styling. But hey! Points for combing her hair and putting something in it to keep it off her forehead, right?

Right. I see many YouTube tutorials in my future.

* These conversations would usually end with me semi-jokingly telling A. that maybe he should be the hair person. I suspect he'd probably be better at it than I would.

This made me laugh! I too lack hair styling skills. I can barely cope with my own. I have two daughters and both have curly hair....they are 7 and 4 and I still don't know what to do with/to/about it.
Being curly I feel like the main choices are 1) brush and have it turn all fluffy making them look like poodles or 2) ignore and have it look either curly or just plain neglected depending on the day. So far we tend to chose option 1 for out of the house days and option 2 for home days.
But so far the kids themselves haven't seemed to notice that braids end up crooked and fall out, pony tails are crooked etc. Fingers crossed that it stays that way for a few more years

Looks cute! And how long do those french, fishtail & regular braids last in a small childs hair anyway, before hair starts escaping?

Poppy looks so adorable with the hair clip! I bet as soon as her hair grows you'll be putting it in tight plaits - I am saying this as if she has fine hair it will mean you aren't battling through knots with a hairbrush as much - I used to cry as a child as my parents ripped through my hair, and tight plaits, immune to wind and bad weather are the way to go! I hope you had a good weekend -Joanne x

The clip is perfect. Those really cute bobby pins work as well. Her hair looks beautiful but seems a bit fine (not at all like her mom's!), so that will probably be a problem. However, I have the utmost confidence you'll rise to the challenge. Like you said, you can learn how to do anything on You Tube.

That is adorable and totally counts! I had to buy a book to figure out how to braid my daughters long, curly hair.
