We have a poll of great import today, and it has nothing to do with the presidential election. It may be divisive, however, so I'm asking everyone to please remain respectful.
The question at hand: What is the best Halloween treat?
I am of course thinking about this because we've had the Halloween haul in our house for the past week, and it's always interesting to see what everyone chooses to eat first.
One son goes right for the Skittles.
One will allow no one to touch his Reese's.
Another can't choose and eats indiscriminately.
And Poppy? Her favorite was this weird novelty thing that looked like a paint roller and was rolled over the tongue.
A. has a great fondness for popcorn balls, which are a packaged thing I had never seen before moving here. He will also eat all the sour things, chewy things, and generally non-chocolate things that I always considered the garbage candy. He even likes Laffy Taffy, which is sort of inconceivable to me.
As for me, I'm mostly with the Reese's kid--particularly Reese's Pieces, although they are rare--but I do love Hundred Grands, which don't really seem to be a thing anymore. I don't think any of the kids got any this year.
Luckily for me, I seem to be particularly sensitive to chocolate that picks up the taste of other candy, which happens when they're all jumbled around in a bag. The chocolate will taste a bit like the lollipops or whatever, which I find disgusting and which keeps me from eating it. No one else seems to notice this, though, so I guess that's just me.
So tell me: What is your favorite Halloween treat? And bonus question: Do you notice that weird flavor transfer to chocolate in a mixed bag of candy?

I certainly got a chuckle out of your question. I like milk duds, heath bars, licorice (black or red).

Love starting my day with a good laugh!!! I have the tastebuds of a bear and will eat any and all candy!!
I am a Butterfingers girl myself. Smells in the bag of candy, yes; taste, no.
I also get the candy flavor transfer issue! It's horrible. Mint is the worst transgressor, followed by peanut butter and then weird fake fruit taste.
Oh, Heath Bars! I love those, too. Another thing I didn't see this year, however. I feel like the variety of chocolate is declining in recent years.
You and A.. He's pretty indiscriminate, too. :-)
Not so many Butterfingers as there used to be, I feel like.
I mostly seem to taste the fake fruit flavors. So gross.
And bubblegum. Bubblegum will absolutely ruin chocolate. Yuck.
I am Reeses all the way! Mary in MN
Entirely with you on the flavor/odor transfer. Chocolate should only ever be stored with chocolate. I'm also especially sensitive to banana and allium (onion, garlic) smell/flavor transfer. A banana included in a sack lunch will pretty much destroy the entire lunch. Banana-flavored Doritos, banana-flavored ham sandwich, banana-flavored gingersnap cookie? Revolting. And that's bananas, which I actually like ... alliums, which I cannot stand, are far worse.
I usually go for Twix or gummy bears/worms/whatever animal. I agree with the transfer of taste/smell. You think it would smell great to have all the candy mixed, but it's too sweet and too many flavors all at once! We separate chocolate and gummy/fruity to try to prevent this from happening!
I love the tootsie rolls that are long and thin. I do like chocolate, but things don't taste the same anymore. (M&M or Milky way). I think variety was limited this year depending what was on sale. The good stuff was very expensive.
Snickers
Skor bars , which I can only find at CVS.
There's definitely a flavor transfer. I like chocolate without nuts, preferably with caramel. Hundred Grand is a hot commodity in my house, where all seven of us want it. Why don't I just go buy some, I wonder. Oh, because I will eat them. Sure. p.s. She who uses "revolting" above is almost certainly my sister. lol.
As a child my favorite chocolate was Hershey's Special Dark. The older I've gotten the darker the chocolate I prefer, until my favorite for snacking is Lindt 85% cocoa, and one bite is enough to sate the craving. Now, all the "regular" chocolate - everything from Hershey or Nestle - just doesn't even taste like chocolate to me.
I'll occasionally eat a Snickers, because I like the nuts and caramel, but would prefer a Payday. I used to love Hundred Grand, and Chunky, and Mr. Goodbar, but can't stand the chocolate any more.
You never see them in Halloween bags, but I love Raisinettes Dark.
So what does show up for Halloween that I like? Milk Duds, Whoppers, M&M Peanut, Twizzlers, Swedish Fish.
I love Hundred Grand too, but haven't seen one in years. Also Baby Ruth bars. Unfortunately no flavor transfer here to stop me from eating.
KitKat and Twix! I also do not like the flavor transfer. I love your non-political poll today!! Just what we all need!!
100 grand, definitely. And you are coming about them being not as prevalent, someone actually sorted one of the giant bags of candy with 100+ pieces and there were only 4. 🙁
My kids give me all the Butterfingers and Almond Joys. They both hate those candies, and those are my favorites so that worked out.
My youngest gets tired of candy by the second day and says, “Here, take whatever you want.” Then my oldest eats it all.

Reese's peanut butter cups or Special Dark. No caramel and nothing gummy or sticky for me.
My favorite candy is guava hard candy.
